This is a national charity, which also operates locally, for elderly people (aged 60 and over), the terminally ill and their pets. Their primary aim is to help keep people and their pets together. This can include dog walking and pet care and short term fostering. They also provide long term care for pets whose owners have died or moved into residential accommodation which will not accept pets. Please look at their website for more details, cinnamon.org.uk.

Great day yesterday at the Maldon Little Ship Club sponsored row in aid of the RNLI! We are immensely proud to announce that we raised a huge £5000 for the RNLI and won a number of awards including best fancy dress (this year was based on the Can Can girls), the Panther Trophy for the most money raised by a single dinghy and first multiple ladies team home.

It was quite chilly, but the crowds cheered us on and so the weather wasn’t an issue.

Thanks to everyone who came along and especially to all our members of the 200 Club and others who sponsored us.

…. and after the race, this is how we relax….!

Thank you 2018 (please click link)

What a fantastic day! Thank you to everyone who supported our 15th annual fun dog show last month including spectators, competitors, stewards, helpers and The Judges! It seems a distant memory now. It was a great day with warm sunshine and blue skies and lots of happy dogs!

We had 70 dogs participate in 200 entries for the 9 classes. As usual, the clear round agility was very popular with all child handlers receiving a rosette.

The canine with the most appealing eyes and the dog the judges would want to take home being the favourite classes with 38 and 36 entries respectively. The judges had such a hard task!

New Year’s Resolution….

This was held on Saturday 20th January 2018 at about 13.30 on Maldon Hythe quay. A cold, grey and rainy day, but lots of boats on the river and a good race!

We’d like to thanks everyone who braved the weather to come along and cheer every one along. Raising money for the RNLI is the game and the race did just that. Over £6000 in total and we’re proud to announce that we raised £4,704 of this total.

Many, many thanks to all those who helped us achieve this magnificent amount through the 200 club we run for the RNLI and individual donations.

If you’ve seen Maldon Standard, don’t be confused with name the reporter gave us – we’ve not renamed ourselves the Base and Oars (??!!!!). We are still The Basin Oars who have been around since 1990 – a mere 28 years! If you want to join the 200 Club, we still have a few numbers left so do contact us for more details.

'Reminder' Presentation SeaChange Sailing Trust

‘Reminder’ Presentation SeaChange Sailing Trust

On Bank Holiday Monday, 28th  August we had great pleasure in presenting a cheque to one of our chosen charities, SeaChange Sailing Trust, supported by this year’s fun dog show held in Daisy Meadow on 10th June.

The £475.00 (half of the £950 total raised from the dog show) will go towards the fitting out of their new  barge ‘Blue Mermaid’.

SeaChange takes underprivileged , excluded and disabled young people for a week or two on ‘Reminder’. Hilary said they have some team leaders who themselves started out on ‘the discarded register’. The youngsters are invited to help with all aspects of life on-board, including navigation, which when they have plotted a course and worked out how long they will take to reach their destination, Hilary tells them that they have just successfully carried out ‘applied maths’. They also get involved with geography, history, cooking, communications, astrology, to name but a few subjects, as well as sail and barge handling, and of course, ‘health and safety’.

The ‘students’ go home with a certificate, often the first they have ever achieved and a lot of self belief.

Basin Oars always get involved, and whilst we were making up twelve bunks with fresh bedding the next ‘crew’ arrived, people from  the other end of the spectrum, Hilary calls it ‘Dementia Adventure’. Folk with their partners or carers going out for a week of leisurely, no pressure enjoyment.

The Basin Oars are so please to have helped this worthy cause. Who knows, we might find ourselves as a passenger in the future!
